Finding the right belt shouldn’t be guesswork.

At BeltUp, we specialise in belts — not trends — so we’ve created a simple guide to help you choose the right size, leather, width and buckle for your body, outfit and lifestyle.

Whether you’re buying your first premium leather belt or upgrading from a worn-out favourite, this guide gives you everything you need to make the perfect choice.

1. Start With the Right Size

The most common belt-buying mistake is choosing the wrong size.
Your belt should fit on the middle hole — not the first, not the last.

✔ Most Accurate Method

Measure your waist at the height you wear the belt (hips, high waisted, mid waist)
That measurement in inches = your belt size.

✔ Fast Method (Using Your Old Belt)

Measure your old belt from the buckle end to your most-used hole.
That measurement in inches = your belt size.

✔ If You Don't Have a Measuring Tape

Use your pants size + 2 inches as a guide.
Example: 34" pants → 36" belt.

2. Choose the Right Belt Width

Different widths suit different outfits. Here’s the simple rule:

30–35mm — Work & Dress

  • Clean and professional

  • Fits suit pants and work trousers

  • Great everyday office width

38–40mm — Casual / Jeans

  • Bigger buckles, bolder designs

  • Made for denim and chinos

  • Strong weekend/all-rounder width

13–25mm — Ladies Slim Belts

  • Ideal for dresses and smart casual outfits

  • Adds shape and proportions without bulk

  • A great accessory piece

Tip: Gents - if you want one belt to do everything, choose 35mm.

3. Leather Types (Explained Simply)

We’re honest about leather — because not all “leather” is actually leather.

Full-Grain & Top Grain Leathers

✔ Strongest part of the hide
✔ Ages beautifully
✔ Premium everyday option
Best for: work, corporate, casual.

Kangaroo Leather

✔ Extremely strong
✔ Surprisingly lightweight
✔ Flexible and long-lasting
Best for: plaited belts, linked belts, light everyday wear.

Crocodile & Exotic Leathers

Best for: statement outfits, dress wear.

Genuine Leather and PU Belts

✔ Budget-friendly
✔ Lightweight
We offer Genuine Leather (lowest grade of leather/bonded/reconstituted etc) and PU belts because some customers prefer low-cost options or occasional wear, but we always label them clearly and educate often, so you know exactly what you’re buying.

4. Choosing the Right Buckle

7. Make Your Belt Last Longer

A quality leather belt should last years — even decades.

Belt Care Tips

  • Avoid storing in humid or damp areas

  • Use leather conditioner or wax biannually or as required

  • Wipe dust and sweat after heavy use with soft, damp (not wet) cloth/microfibre
